Case Study: Fixing the Floor at an Enmore Road Live Venue

The problem: mopping the wrong contaminant

Spilled beer, spirits and mixers leave sugar behind. Sugar residue does not behave like dirt. A neutral detergent and a mop dissolves it, spreads it evenly across the entire floor, and leaves it to dry again as a thinner but wider film. Repeat that six nights a week for a season and you have a room where every square metre is slightly tacky and the cleaner is technically doing exactly what the contract said.

The venue had two other issues stacked on top. Bathrooms were reset once after close, which is nowhere near enough for a block that processes eight hundred people over a weekend. And the rear courtyard used as the smoking area was going days between proper sweeps, so glass, butts and general debris were accumulating in the corners where nobody was looking.

What we changed

• Replaced the neutral detergent with a degreasing floor treatment applied nightly across the band room and front bar
• Added a weekly machine scrub on the sealed concrete to break the residue already embedded in the surface texture
• Used a low-moisture method on the timber front bar boards, which will not tolerate the water volume the concrete accepts
• Moved bathrooms to a full reset with documented weekly drain treatment rather than a nightly wipe-through
• Put the rear courtyard on the nightly scope — swept, ashtrays emptied, furniture wiped, glass cleared from corners
• Rostered crew size against the venue show calendar each month instead of a fixed weekly pattern
• Quoted post-event deep cleans in advance so nothing was being negotiated at four in the morning
• Scheduled the cellar and kitchen deep clean quarterly as a separate visible line item

The results

The band room floor stopped being tacky within four weeks. Three machine scrubs cleared the accumulated residue and the nightly degreaser has held it ever since — the venue manager described the difference after the second scrub as the floor finally sounding right underfoot. The timber front bar took slightly longer because the low-moisture method works more gradually, but reached the same point by week six.

Bathroom complaints logged by front-of-house staff went from a weekly occurrence to none across the following quarter. The venue has recorded no floor-related slip incidents since the program began, which matters to their insurer as much as it does to their patrons. Rostering against the show calendar also eliminated the recurring problem of a two-person crew arriving after a sold-out night and simply not having the hours to finish.

The lesson for other venues

If your floor is sticky and your cleaner mops it every night, more mopping will not fix it — the chemistry is wrong and mechanical agitation is missing.
