No cleaner enters a Newtown early learning centre for us without a current national police check and a NSW Working with Children Check, and we hand both clearance numbers to the director before the first shift. That is not a marketing line — it is the first thing an assessor will ask about, and the first thing a parent will ask about if anything ever goes wrong.

• Floors vacuumed and mopped with a fragrance-free neutral detergent; carpet and soft-fall areas deep cleaned periodically
• Outdoor play — soft-fall swept, sandpit raked and turned, outdoor furniture wiped, external bins washed

Products chosen for small lungs and small hands

General surfaces get a low-toxicity, fragrance-free cleaner. Disinfectant is reserved for the areas that genuinely need it — nappy change, bathrooms, food preparation and any surface following an illness — because saturating a playroom in hospital-grade product every night is neither necessary nor good for the children in it.

Every product used on site has a current safety data sheet in a folder we leave with the director, along with the dilution rates. When a parent asks what is being sprayed on the toys, the answer is in a folder rather than a phone call to us.

Documentation that survives an NQS visit

The scope is written against Quality Area 2 expectations with a frequency attached to every task, and each visit ends with a signed sheet. During a gastro or hand-foot-and-mouth outbreak we can step the program up to an outbreak protocol — full disinfection of all touch points, toys removed from rotation and sanitised, soft furnishings treated — and that escalation is documented too.
